infoWERK is working on the IMENSIM research project on optimized use of simulators through the integration of mental training techniques with other Austrian groups: the Institute of Psychology at the University of Graz and AMST Systemtechnik GmbH in Ranshofen. The project is supported and funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) with the goal of implementing mental training elements in existing aviation training courses for maneuvers in critical flight situations. The groups say mental training is used with great success in areas such as top-class sports, surgery and the military – and they are working to find out if this approach can also be used efficiently for pilot training and education.

Infowerk says past Loss-of-Control In-Flight accidents have shown training for critical flight situations needs to be optimized. But because “increased hours of training are only feasible to a limited extent for financial reasons, it should be proven that mental training elements increase the effectiveness of aviation training for critical flight situations. Through this, pilot performance regarding the detection of imminent critical situations and the safe recovery of upsets is ought should be increased significantly and new training scenarios will be oriented towards the ICAO guidelines for Upset Recovery training.
