CAT: The Journal for Civil Aviation Training

The Journal for Civil Aviation Training is the world’s leading magazine for airline simulation and training.

CAT Magazine showcases the latest training practices for pilots, cabin crew and maintainers throughout the civil airline industry. Published six times a year, every issue of the magazine contains at least five major articles on training around the world, along with an extended news and analysis section, event reviews and an industry calendar.

CAT Editorial Team

Chris Lehman – Editor in Chief 
Chris has been Editor in Chief of CAT and MS&T Magazines for the past 19 years. He has 26 years’ experience in military and civil aviation training and simulation, and holds undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences. Chris has an extensive background in training systems development, international marketing and sales, contracts and program management. He maintains his civil pilot license and has been current on fixed-wing aircraft for over 30 years. Chris has been the Conference Chair of the WATS and EATS aviation training conferences for over a decade. He is based in Ontario, Canada and is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS).

Marty Kauchak – Group Editor
Marty is a retired US Navy Captain, having served for more than 23 years in the surface warfare community. His insights and knowledge about training and simulation were gained through five operational assignments and major staff management positions. In addition to Marty’s military experience, he brings expertise as a former editor and writer for defense publications in the US and overseas. He also developed unique perspectives and knowledge about training during his time as congressional and media outreach coordinator for the US DoD’s Training Transformation Program. Marty is based in New Orleans, USA.

Chuck Weirauch – US Affairs Editor
Chuck has been writing for CAT and MS&T for more than ten years. His background encompassing more than 25 years includes extensive editorial experience in a wide variety of emerging new technologies. He has written for major aerospace companies on their latest technology research and development work, including that for military and civilian aircraft. As a public affairs writer for NASA at Kennedy Space Center, Chuck covered such space agency programs as the Space Shuttle, simulation technologies, NASA aviation research and the agency’s advanced research and technology spinoffs program.

Chris Long – European and Asian Affairs Editor
Chris Long began his aviation career as a military pilot for the Royal Air Force operating in strategic reconnaissance, tanker and instructional roles. This time included three years as a basic jet instructor on exchange with the French Air force. After leaving the Air Force, Chris joined BAe Systems and moving to the commercial flying world he was involved in ab initio pilot training, and qualified as a UK ATPL, TRI/TRE, FAA ATP/ME/CFI. While his work took him to live in Germany, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, the United States and France, Chris is now based in Toulouse, France, where he works as a consultant on projects run by the European Commission and for several major European players. Chris writes for CAT magazine and is the conference chair for the Asian Aviation Education and Training Symposium (AAETS). He has recently been enrolled as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAes).

Robert Moorman
Robert Moorman is a writer who began his aviation writing career in 1984 with Professional Pilot magazine. His experience covers various segments of the civil and military aviation industry, including commercial air transport, business aviation, military, maintenance and technology. He covers both fixed and rotary wing industries. He writes aviation training articles for CAT plus he contributes features and editorials to several other publications from his office in Alexandria, Virginia. In 2017, Robert was honoured at the prestigious Aerospace Media Awards receiving the “Best Safety, Training and Simulation Award” for his CAT magazine article, “Hidden in Plane Sight”.

Amanda Towner – News
Amanda writes news articles for all three of the Halldale Group’s magazine news websites. She studied English and Creative Writing at Stetson University, where she became a Sullivan Scholar for her work. Her writing covers several topics including journalism and storytelling, and has been featured in several publications.
